Greek innovation leads to new yellow kiwi varieties

In a significant leap for agro-innovation, Greek experts have spearheaded the development of novel yellow kiwi strains, showcasing a blend of scientific prowess and environmental mindfulness. The Arta-based Phytotechniki, a frontrunner in tissue culture propagation, alongside Zeus Radiant Producers Organisation from Karitsa, Pieria, have melded their expertise with the University of Udine, Italy, aiming to forge kiwi varieties that stand resilient against climate adversities while packing a nutritional punch.

Tagged under the vibrant KIKOKA brand, these kiwis are a testament to cross-border collaboration with the University of Udine and the NKP-New Kiwi Plant venture, promising a sustainable future for kiwi cultivation. The varieties, known for their intense yellow hue and fluff-less texture, are a hit in markets across Britain, Italy, New Zealand, and beyond, thanks to their superior shelf life and resistance to common bacterial threats.

With consumer appetite for yellow kiwifruit on an upswing, the introduction of these varieties couldn't be timelier. KIKOKA's success is not just a win for nutritional innovation but also a strategic move to cement Greece's position in the global kiwifruit market. The initiative has already seen the harvesting of 450 tonnes under the KIKOKA brand, with plans underway to establish a European Consortium to streamline the branding and marketing efforts across the continent.

At the core of this venture is the collaboration between Greek and Italian agricultural specialists, highlighting Greece's pivotal role in the KIKOKA Yellow Ray Program. This initiative not only underscores the potential of international partnerships in agricultural innovation but also sets a precedent for sustainable and nutrition-focused farming practices.
