A discussion on the European situation with Francesca Barbieri from "Zanarini srl"

Risk of stock problems for carrots

"Just like every year, we have the pleasure of sharing our considerations concerning the next Italian carrot campaign based on what we have seen at Fruit Logistica," reports Francesca Barbieri, product manager at "Zanarini srl".

"As for the European market, we believe the situation in May/July will be more or less the same as last year, with stock that will in some cases be insufficient to guarantee continuous supplies: the adverse weather conditions during harvesting in the fall and the abundant precipitations caused quality problems that have made it impossible to stock the damaged batches."

"France, Belgium and the Netherlands haven announced that, should sales remain constant or even increase over the next few months, the old harvest will finish already in mid-March or even earlier. We have talked to Italian producers to understand how Italy can meet the needs of the European market."

"Sicily began commercializing its new carrots already in early February, as anticipated: it is worth noting that Sicily works by negotiating contracts for most of its production already upon sowing, leaving only few quantities to the free market. Combined with the fact that volumes will not be high, this leads us to believe Sicily will not have a lot of produce left to be destined abroad."

"Carrots from the Veneto, which we mainly deal with at Zanarini, will become available towards mid-May, when the Sicilian produce will probably be finished and Europe will need produce. This leads us to believe we will be able to replicate a good campaign with the Italian produce (see data in the chart), meaning the prices will maintain on medium-high levels in May/July, albeit maybe not at the level of last year (see data below)."

"10,341 hectares were destined to carrot production in Italy in 2023, +22% than the previous year (ISTAT data) while, although no official data are available yet for 2024, sowed areas should be more or less the same."

"This data, combined with a market that is looking rather tense in terms of prices and characterized by high demand from European operators, makes us suggest to those in need of constant supplies to analyze their needs in order to plan the work weekly. This will enable continuous supplies to clients and a higher bargaining strength to suppliers."

"We will be available to plan the work as soon as we get a clear idea of the yields and availability, then we will send periodic reports to keep operators updated as regards market trends and the state of production, as we believe the exchange of information and a dialogue between the actors must always precede sales."

"Please do contact Zanarini s.r.l. whatever your need, either to strengthen existing relations or establish new fruitful collaborations."
