Bahian fruit exports experience massive growth in Brazil

In the first eleven months of 2023, Bahian fruit exports saw a significant surge, reaching 170,000 tons and generating R$1.05 billion in revenue. This represents a 37% increase compared to the same period in the previous year.

The key contributors to this success were the production of mango and grapes, along with an increase in shipments of fruits such as pineapple, apricot, fig, guava, papaya, watermelon, lemon and lime, according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Agrostat/Mapa).

The Brazilian Association of Producers and Exporters of Fruits and Derivatives (Abrafrutas) commends the collaborative efforts of state and federal governments, and sector-representing entities, in opening new markets for Brazilian fruits. Abrafrutas president, Guilherme Coelho, attributes this growth to favourable pricing in 2023, particularly for Northeastern producers.

“Grape exports increased by 44%, totaling around 62.3 thousand tons in the eleven months of the year. In terms of value, mango exports reached around US$37.8 million in December 2023”, says Coelho.

Despite the logistical challenges of reaching the Salvador Container Terminal (Tecon), Anderson Ferreira, a mango producer in the Maniçoba region, highlights an increase in both cultivation and exportation of the fruit in recent years. Luiz Soares, a grape producer in the Juazeiro region, points out the favourable conditions for commercializing table grapes in 2023.
