Jacques Guironnet, ASPA2

“Our asparagus is particularly sweet this year”

Once again this year, the first white asparagus of ASPA2 mark the start of the French campaign. For Jacques Guironnet, head of the company based in Indre et Loire, marketing began two weeks ago. This early start is no accident. It is thanks to a heating network “that emits no CO2 or other greenhouse gasses,” making the company not only the first on the French market, but also one of the first in Europe. “This heating gives our asparagus an extremely consistent quality,” both visually and in terms of taste, “with very little fiber and no bitterness. Asparagus crops do not like temperature variations.” And this year, “the sugar content is particularly high. The plants must have built up very good reserves during their vegetative development.”

A campaign similar to last year
On the market, ASPA2 should once again enjoy a fine campaign this year, despite “a very slight increase in prices. A few incidents at Rungis have caused some disruptions,” explains Jacques, referring to the latest snow episode, which caused a drop in traffic and made it more difficult to transport goods, “but everything is now back to normal.” For the company, which exports all the way to Asia, the outlook is as promising as in 2023.
