MSC Invernaderos has been working on greenhouse projects all over the world for over 30 years and has had successful projects in nearly 70 countries. Having a long history with projects in tropical areas, it remains an area of expertise for them, and they have just concluded their latest Tropical Greenhouse project in the Caribbean.
Tropical conditions
“People acquainted with tropical agricultural areas have likely seen unsuccessful greenhouse projects a plenty. This is mostly due to a misunderstanding of the concepts needed to be applied on this special weather conditions, such as a lack of ventilation leading to a heated climate inside the structure. Because of that, we have been working with a zenithal ventilation system since our first tropical projects,” says Miguel Ayuso of MSC Invernaderos.
MSC has several greenhouse models to apply the best suitable solution to a given situation. That is why each tropical greenhouse model is specifically designed for the type of crop their growers aim to grow.
“There are many other important factors to consider regarding greenhouse projects in tropical areas. Things like having a galvanized steel structure so you do not have an oxidation problem, using the correct plastic film to either reduce or increase the inside temperature and proper anti-insect isolation to reduce the pest possibilities, just to name a few. We could write a whole book on must and must-not haves when it comes to greenhouses in tropical areas.”
The Caribbean project
The client, in this case, requested a greenhouse able to grow crops that needed to be hung from the top of the greenhouse. It needed to be strong enough to support a weight of 40kg/m2, as well as hold its own against winds of up to 120km/h. There was a need for an increased strength of the structure, that would decrease as much temperature as possible without the need of using electricity or water. It also needed to be affordable enough so his business project could be done.
“The technical design of the new greenhouse makes use of wind flows to push hot air out of the greenhouse through the roof window, which allows the air to be refreshed and provides a cooler temperature inside the greenhouse. The structure was strengthened with galvanized steel to make it more robust and resilient against gusts of wind,” says Miguel.
“As we all know, efficiency is key when it comes to greenhouse design, as your whole crop may suffer from a poorly designed greenhouse project. This is why we at MSC Invernaderos see our experience and 2 manufacturing plants as our greatest assets.
