Irish horticulture exports in 2023 dominated by mushrooms, Bord Bia reports

In 2023, the total export value of horticulture and cereals from Ireland was €295 million, with mushrooms contributing to nearly half of this amount, according to Bord Bia's Export Performance and Prospects Report 2023/24, released on this Wednesday.

Despite the overall sector witnessing a 6% decline year on year, the mushroom sector experienced a fairly successful year, particularly in the UK, Ireland's primary market for mushrooms. Sales value increased despite a decrease in volumes, reflecting the price hikes achieved over the year.

Bord Bia further highlighted that unlike other produce, mushroom production was not impacted by weather disruptions in 2023 due to its "controlled environment" production process.

The most significant challenge faced by the mushroom sector in 2023 was the slowdown in the UK economy, which is a crucial market for Irish exports. Nonetheless, the sector demonstrated resilience as customers purchased fewer fresh fruits and vegetables, with mushroom export volumes dropping "only 6% year on year".

Despite rising prices aiding producers in maintaining their margins, labour availability continues to be a challenge across the sector, as per Bord Bia.

Looking ahead to 2024, Bord Bia holds a "positive" outlook for the mushroom sector, contingent on the sector's ability to manage costs and achieve further price increases. Bord Bia also noted the industry's longstanding relationship with UK retailers, built on the supply of quality mushrooms and good service. Moreover, Irish companies are positioning themselves as "premium suppliers with innovative vitamin-enhanced mushrooms".
