Mexico's annual mango production up until November 2023 exceeded 2.23 million tons, breaking the record of the last decade, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (Sader).
This volume exceeded the 2.16 million tons harvested in the same period of 2022, according to a statement from the agency.
"According to preliminary data from the Agri-Food and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), in the last decade, production has increased by about 39%, going from 1.6 million tons in 2013 to 2.23 million tons by November 2023," the agency stated.
The Sader attributed the increase to the 5% increase in the area allocated for mango production, which stands at 219,452 hectares.
In addition, in the same period, the average yield per hectare went from 10.83 tons to 10.85 tons, according to the federal agency.
Sinaloa is the state with the highest production with 475,324 tons. It is followed by Guerrero with 417,209 tons, Nayarit with 323,117 tons, Chiapas with 272,151 tons, and Oaxaca with 213,960 tons.
Together, these five states account for 76% of the national production.
"80% of the mango is harvested from April to August. Mexico is a world-leading mango producer with a high capacity to mobilize its product, so it also makes the largest shipments abroad in those months," the Sader added.
According to the agency, Mexicans consume approximately 13 kilograms of mango a year, and this fruit accounts for 9% of the country's fruit production.
