Lower production for Greek kiwis

"We estimate our season will end about a month earlier"

The production of kiwis in Greece was lower this season and, as a consequence, Apostolos Tsinoglou, owner of the Greek fruit exporter Europe Export, decided to delay some of the orders to get better prices: “Over the past two months, our kiwi season has developed quite nicely. Prices have been very good since the beginning of the season as well. As the Greek kiwi production was lower this year, we’ve tried to delay orders, so that we have stocks for a longer time, as well as receive better prices for the product. Despite these efforts, we still estimate that our season will end about a month earlier than it would normally.”

The shipping route to India is experiencing significant delays, but Tsinoglou states there’s not much more they can do and just have to hope the situation resolves while the goods are being transported. “Due to the shipping problems surrounding the black sea, there has been an increase in prices in the Indian market. As a result of which, all of our customers are asking us for a solution, as the alternative would be a transit time of no less than 55 days. As there is no other solution, we opted to continue to load normally and hope that during the trip the current problems will be resolved.”

“Looking at demand, we’re seeing a lot of requests from Brazil, which is unusual. Our expectations are that the kiwi prices will increase by 0.30 euro, compared to other years when the increase around this time in the season amounted to 0.05 euro. The steeper increase has to do with the fewer available stocks. However, we expect that the market can withstand such an increase,” Tsinoglou concludes.
