Climbing salad prices could lead to renewed supermarket shortages

Britain might be heading for a new salad crisis; costs for the healthy veg option have soared 50 per cent in the past month and some experts are now warning the public to expect shortages in supermarkets. It comes as countries supplying out-of-season veg have been hit hard by freak weather conditions while UK growers have found increased energy, transport and labour costs have pushed their own prices high.

Meanwhile many British farmers, struggling with the higher bills and lower margins, have simply stopped growing unprofitable crops which has led to shortages and higher prices at the checkout. Industry leaders say 10 per cent of UK cucumber growers have left the sector this year.
