'Want to avoid a hangover? Eat asparagus!"

Apparently, the Australians are gearing up for a very, very merry Christmas this year. According to a recent survey, nearly 73% of people would be getting boozy this Christmas Eve. This will inevitably result in a lot of Christmas Day hangovers.

While desperate times may call for desperate measures, one surprising vegetable could be your secret hangover cure. If you want to avoid the dreaded Christmas day hangover, one shopper has spotted a fun fact about the humble asparagus when doing their groceries. "Want to avoid a hangover? Eat asparagus!" the label said. "Its minerals and amino acids not only protect the liver from toxins, the enzymes in asparagus can help break down the alcohol and alleviate hangovers."

Alas, dietitian and nutritionist Samantha Cassetty said it wasn't a "magic bullet" solution. "Asparagus does have bioactive substances that in cell studies were found to have an effect on protecting your liver cells and modifying the effect of alcohol," she said, adding that it was impossible to tell how much asparagus would be needed to make an impact.
