Egypt now third in global onion production, surpassing the US

It seems that Egypt emerged as the third largest onion producer globally, only surpassed by India and China. According to Mustafa El-Nagary, Vice President of the Egyptian Exporters Association, his nation has even surpassed the US. He named Egyptian onions the third largest export crop, trailing behind oranges and potatoes.

El-Nagary highlighted a crucial point that the statistics on Egypt’s agricultural land size are not always accurate and need to take into account monthly consumption rates. As part of their strategy, the Egyptian Exporters Association sets a self-sufficiency limit regularly. A decrease in this limit triggers a request to the Cabinet to slash export volumes. On the other hand, an increased production of a commodity that Egypt imports prompts a reduction in importation.
