Spain and the Netherlands have lost market share in the European pepper market

During the first nine months of this year, Spain and the Netherlands have lost market share in the European pepper market in favor of Morocco and Turkey, according to a report prepared by the Spanish news service Hortoinfo based on data from Euroestacom.

Between January and September 2023, Spain sold 357.46 million kilos of peppers to the EU, i.e. 82.39 million kilos or 18.73% less than in the same period of 2019. However, the value of Spanish sales increased by 199.95 million euro (+28.91%), reaching 891.46 million euro, as the average price increased from €1.57 per kilo in 2019 to €2.49 per kilo in 2023.

Spain was followed by the Netherlands, which sold 192.54 million kilos of peppers in the EU (-10.01%), worth 461.66 million euro, and at an average price of 2.40 euro per kilo.

Morocco was the third largest supplier with 93.44 million kilos (+32.51%). The value of Moroccan pepper exports to the EU amounted to €128.09 million and the average price stood at €1.37 per kilo.

Turkey ranked fourth with 41.57 million kilos (+68.17%). The value of its sales increased by an impressive 134.75%, reaching 70.32 million euro.

Together, EU Member States purchased a total of 860.46 million kilos of peppers between January and September 2023, i.e. 6.77% less than in the first nine months of 2019. The value of these purchases amounted to 1.913 billion euro and the average price stood at 2.22 euro per kilo.
