Jürgen Hubounig, Managing Director of Zimpelmann Select-Fruit & Co.

Less availability of mangoes from Peru and sugar snap peas from Kenya

The financial year of 2023 was a good one for the Cologne-based import company Zimpelmann Select-Fruit & Co., according to Managing Director Jürgen Hubounig. "Some customers are already stocking up for the Christmas season, while others are still very hesitant to buy. We were also able to acquire some new customers this year, which meant we had a very good year."

He continues: "The main problem we face, however, is getting any goods at all. Mangoes from Peru are extremely scarce and very expensive because they have a 40 percent smaller harvest than the year before. Sugar snap peas from Kenya in particular are faced with weather-related problems, which is why prices are very high. A box of sugar snap peas usually costs around EUR 20.00, but they are now selling for around EUR 30.00 in the Netherlands."

"Chilies from South Africa and physalis from Colombia will be scarce or unavailable in the coming weeks due to bad weather," Hubounig concludes.
