Still room to educate consumers on pineapples

Demand looks to be challenging the supply of pineapples right now, particularly on larger-sized fruit which is especially in tight supply. “Typically, production faces challenges during December, primarily due to increased demand from chain stores for planned holiday promotions,” says Scott DiMartini, VP of sales, pineapples for Fyffes North America. “Consequently, the supply levels in December are slightly lower compared to the same period last year, with an estimated five to 10 percent reduction in volume available.”

While the supply of pineapple is year-round, there are significant fluctuations throughout the year. DiMartini says this is largely due to Natural Differentiated Flowering (NDF), a phenomenon where pineapple plants flower prematurely. “Triggered by shorter days and cooler nights, natural flowering leads to a lower yield of commercially viable fruits for export,” he says, noting that in addition, in the past two years, growers have faced numerous challenges, including adverse weather impacting planting schedules, increased production costs due to the appreciation of the Costa Rican Colon, labor shortages and rising labor costs.

Costa Rica continues to be the dominant player in pineapple production and export with 90 percent of the fresh pineapples arriving in North America for consumption originating from this country. Fyffes’ farms are located in the Puerto Viejo area on the Atlantic side of Costa Rica. “This region, along with the Guapiles area, is renowned for its prolific pineapple production, contributing significantly to the industry,” says DiMartini.

Pricing picking up
As for pricing right now, open market prices are showing signs of strengthening which is driven by those tighter supplies and increasing demand. “Looking ahead to 2024, cost structures are anticipated to rise due to several factors, with the exchange rate in Costa Rica being one of the most significant contributors,” adds DiMartini.

At the same time, Fyffes anticipates growth and expansion opportunities in the preparation and consumption of pineapples. Social media for example is increasingly influential in educating consumers about innovative and enjoyable ways to prepare and enjoy pineapples.

“Enhancing general consumer knowledge about pineapples is essential. Numerous misconceptions and myths exist regarding how to correctly choose pineapples at the grocery store,” says DiMartini, noting these include beliefs about the fruit's shell color, smell and the characteristics of its crown, among others. “In addition, many consumers are unsure about the pineapple's readiness to be eaten immediately after purchase. Educating consumers on this fact can enhance their shopping experience and satisfaction with the product, ensuring they enjoy the fruit at its best.”

Also key is educating consumers on the actual cutting and preparing of pineapples. “Many shoppers are prevented by the perceived effort of preparing this fruit. By providing clear, simple instructions and perhaps visual guides or demonstrations, we might make pineapples more approachable for consumers to purchase and enjoy them,” adds DiMartini.
