New Year export: Azerbaijani fruit prices surge in local markets

The Azerbaijani markets witnessed a sharp increase in prices of mandarins and persimmons due to the export of these fruits to Russia. Buyers express discontent over high prices and a sudden shortage. In early December, persimmons were priced from 0.82 to 1.4 euros per kilogram, while mandarins ranged from 0.55 to 0.82 euros. Vendors attribute the spike to bulk exports to Russia.

Local oranges reached 0.82 to 1.1 euros, compared to last year's lower prices. Cucumbers experienced a significant price increase, reaching 1.6 to 2.2 euros in a month, due to both seasonality and decreased supply.

According to Rosselkhoznadzor, Azerbaijan's agricultural exports to Russia have risen by 11.3% as of October 29, 2023.

Despite market dynamics, Azerbaijan remains a top global persimmon producer, cultivating over 20 citrus varieties, with a substantial portion exported to Russia. The lower yield and increased demand contribute to the current price situation.
