According to Fresh Fruit, in the first 10 months of the year, Peruvian ginger exports grew by 28% in volume and 60% in value over the same period of 2022, amounting to 59,852 tons and 92 million dollars.
This increase was due to the fact that China, the largest exporter of ginger in the world, limited its exports as it transitioned from the old to the new season, a time when the quality of its old harvest decreased.
The North American market, the Peruvian ginger's main destination market, purchased a total of 25,674 tons of ginger worth 40 million dollars, i.e. 13% more volume and 39% more value than in the same period of last year. The Netherlands, however, experienced the largest increase as it acquired 18,732 tons of ginger for 29 million dollars, i.e. 63% more volume and 147% more value.
Canada also increased its imports substantially with the purchase of 2,940 tons for 5 million dollars, i.e. 30% more volume and 88% more value.
Peruvian ginger exports were led by exports of fresh ginger (98%), followed by exports of juice ginger (1.2%), powdered or crushed ginger (0.7%), and mashed ginger (0.1%).
