At the moment, the greenhouse supply of bell peppers is normal for this time of year. “The supply is also comparable to last year with a slight few more around,” says Ray Mastronardi, VP of Sales, DelFrescoPure®.
Right now, the supply is coming from Canada, though the season from there ends at the end of November and into the beginning of December. At the same time, Mexico, which started its production earlier than usual this year due to planting times, will continue with its season supplying bell peppers. Spain is also supplying the market.
Demand to pick up
As for demand, it’s normal for this time of year, says Mastronardi. “The consumption will be increasing for the coming weeks, specifically for the Christmas and New Year’s holidays,” he adds. That’s leaving pricing on par for this time of year but pricing is expected to also increase for the holidays.
Looking ahead, bell pepper production dips when the Canadian season ends. “Then typically, there are shortages until the next region which is Culiacan, Mexico, begins production,” says Mastronardi. Also possibly impacting supply ahead will be the fact that cold weather typically affects production in Mexico towards the end of December and going into January.
