Huelva's avocado production has experienced exponential growth in recent years. Data from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture show that in 2018 there were only 25 hectares in production in the province, while in 2022 this figure had increased exponentially to 1,800 hectares. Huelva has positioned itself as an interesting option for the expansion of avocado cultivation for Spanish companies in the tropical sector, such as Avofun Europe.

"This year's production is similar to that of previous years: around 600 tons. Young plants are delivering great yields and good calibers, but water restrictions caused by drought and irregularities in the flowering due to adverse weather conditions have not helped achieve the expected increase," said Carmen Rodriguez.
Avofun, which has more than 150 hectares planted with avocados in the province, started its activity in 2019, hand in hand with leading companies in the fruit and vegetable sector. "It is a reality that Huelva has potential and the means to produce quality avocados, but it is also true that there is not so much land available, because Huelva is an area with high value crops, such as berries, and availability is limited," she says.

As for the marketing, she says that "our goal is to continue growing. We target customers that are highly committed to our sustainability project, trying to limit their environmental impact as much as possible. An example of this are the measures we have implemented to reduce water consumption on the farm and produce zero waste avocados," she said.
