VBT figures week 45:

Strawberry and cucumber prices continue to rise

With the first cucumbers grown under lights on the market, the cucumber price continued to rise. The VBT average price for week 45 came to 81.7 euro cents each. A price almost twice the five-year average. Tomato and pepper prices are also above that five-year average, although here, there has not been the fast price increase as with cucumber.

The average price for loose tomatoes at the auctions of the Federation of Belgian Horticultural Cooperatives rose very slightly to 1.11 euros per kilo. Vine tomatoes fetched an average of 1.53 euros per kilo.

The traditional pepper season is finished. More and more greenhouses are being cleared for crop rotation. Peppers are being imported. Average prices for both yellow (38 euro cents), green (58 euro cents), and red (rounded 80 euro cents) fell.

Lettuce crops are going back into the greenhouse. For head lettuce, the price is on the rise, unlike last year, when prices actually slipped in early November. The unit price in week 45 came to 63 euro cents.

The steep rise in strawberry prices has slowed down slightly, but with an average price of 8.92 euros per kilo, the average price is still high. In recent years, the price started to drop slightly from this point onwards.
