Brazilian limes doing well in European markets during 2023

Brazil’s main lime producing and exporting area, the São Paulo Region, is seeing a good 2023 harvest season in terms of quality in Europe, “but not as good as 2022,” says Cassiano Berol, head of the export department at UP-Fruit.

“Over the last few weeks Brazil sent 50/60 containers per week, in week 44 Brazil sent 100 containers to Europe.”

Most of the Tahiti limes are grown in the municipality of Itajobi, which is known as the lemon capital with 43% of São Paulo's volumes coming from this area. During the peak season prices tend to be lower reaching R$8 a box, while in the low season prices can increase up to R$80 per box due to the lower volumes notes Abrafrutas.

Berol says Brazil has two different areas for lime production. “We have the North and South areas. The South is the region responsible for 60/70% of volumes and the North for 30/40%. The São Paulo Region’s plantations are responsible for 60-70% of Brazilian lime exports. Crops in the South are almost done for the season and the new season will start later in November/December, what we see now is fruit of average quality with smaller sizes. In the North the peak of season still has not arrived yet, and the fruit is still smaller than usual. The peak of the season in the south is in May,” explains Berol.

The Brazilian exporter of mangoes and limes, UP-Fruit, has expanded by buying their own farm to secure and increase supplies to their main market of Europe. They also export other fruit and vegetables that include sweet potato, ginger, which is available from the end of June, avocado, Kabocha Pumpkin, atemoya and some Cush Yam.
