Garlic prices increased by more than 55% year-on-year

Garlic is one of the main condiments in China. Since April this year, garlic prices across China have mainly increased and remained relatively high in the second half of the year. The latest data from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs shows that the national average garlic wholesale price in October this year was ¥ 10.48/kg, a month-on-month increase of 2.6% and a year-on-year increase of 55.7%. In Beijing, the growth of garlic is even more obvious.

Some merchants said that the main garlic-producing areas had a bumper harvest in May last year. The supply increased and the price fell, which caused the farmers' willingness to plant less last autumn, and the planting area decreased by about 15%. Coupled with the large temperature fluctuations in northern production areas last winter and this spring, garlic yields have declined. Therefore, after the new garlic was launched in May this year, the price did not fall but rose. The merchant said that due to the high price of garlic, purchasing demand was suppressed and sales volume decreased significantly.

According to reports, the garlic currently sold in the Xinfadi market is mainly from Henan and Jiangsu, and some comes from Shandong. The total daily market sales range from 180 tons to 200 tons, which is half of the same period last year.

Liu Tong, a market analyst in the Xinfadi market in Beijing, said that garlic started harvesting in May and June this year. After drying, it basically started to be stored in July and August. The price is twice as high as last year, so the price in the later period will not change too significantly in a short period of time, and will basically run at a high level.
