"Good quality sweet potatoes are still available from Egypt"

The Egyptian sweet potato season continues amid heated competition between exporters. As the season progresses, it becomes increasingly difficult to source good quality batches, which transfers the competition to the price front. Mohamed Maatouk, CEO of the Egyptian Emirati food industries, assures however that "good quality sweet potatoes are still available from Egypt".

Maatouk says, "At the Egyptian Emirati, we stand out in this context. At this late stage of the season, we continue to maintain high-quality shipments and a very competitive price against high European market demand this year. We are helped by volumes that exceed last year's, better sizes, and special attention from the Egyptian government to the sweet potato industry in order to capitalize on the high demand."

According to the exporter, demand comes in particular from the Netherlands and the UK, the biggest markets for Egyptian sweet potatoes. He adds, "We want to reassure importers of sweet potatoes, especially in Europe, of an unsuspected supply from Egypt, at a time when the main other origins are experiencing supply disruptions due to weather conditions."

"The Egyptian Emirati increased its acreage of sweet potatoes last year," adds Maatouk, "together with a Dutch partner, we implemented a large project and dedicated new areas to the Dutch market to ensure sufficient volumes at the best quality throughout the season. This increases our export capacity to 40 containers of sweet potatoes per week to the European market. Our integrated operations, as both producer and exporter, enable us to guarantee the best prices for quality batches."
