The Gotomi Women Business Association is calling on the relevant authorities to install cooling facilities for perishable produces awaiting flights out of Goroka airport. Chairwoman Tala Gotaha made this call at the groundbreaking ceremony for their resource centre at Asaro on last Friday.
Mushroom is one of the products produced by 22 members of the association from Gimiseve village in lower Asaro. These are then sold in Goroka, Lae and Port Moresby in the National Capital District.
According Ms Gotaha. they sell their products, including mushrooms, to Goroka Provincial Hospital and others, but the mushrooms are delicate and do not last long. "We do not harvest until we receive an order from our clients in Lae or Port Moresby,' she said. "The mushroom rot when flights are delayed or cancelled and we lose business. This is the challenge we face. A cooling facility must be set up at the airport where our perishable produces, including mushrooms can be stored while awaiting the flights.”
