Sakata expands its range of early bell peppers with Checo

New bell pepper variety that stands out "for its size and capacity to set with heat"

Sakata has presented its new early red bell pepper variety: Checo, which comes to improve and expand its range. It is the first variety with a complete pack of resistances that, in addition to including intermediate resistance to powdery mildew, is also resistant to nematodes. The Checo's strong point is undoubtedly its size. Juan Antonio Barranco, Sakata's bell pepper product promoter, said that the Checo "is an innovative variety, in the sense that the fruit already reaches large calibers in the first setting with heat, and this continues throughout the entire cycle. The Checo plant is strong, with a vigorous root that allows it to perform outstandingly well in poor and infertile soils. Thanks to this vigor, it is able to overwinter without problems," says Juan Antonio.

The Checo is a variety for early transplanting in June that has been yielding "excellent results," especially in the area of Berja and Dalías, with an early flowering and rapid entry into production. Producer Antonio Alberto Díaz described his experience with the Checo as very good. "It has been reaching extraordinary sizes, despite the high temperatures this summer. It has been setting and continues to set perfectly, without any fruit losses." Also, the fruit can be left for long on the plant "without it over-ripening."

The Checo is a variety with high generative capacity. Pedro Fernandez, Sakata's commercial technician, said that "sometimes, it delivers up to two or more harvests per season. The fruits live up to the high quality standards set by the Sibac, Juma and Moma. They are smooth, shiny, with an attractive red color. Also, harvesting is simple and the stalk is preserved in its entirety."

There is something that the Checo has in common with the rest of the range: the reason for its name. Based on the claim "I am part of you", with which Sakata seeks to get the whole team involved in the development of its bell pepper varieties, the Checo has been named after commercial technician Pedro Fernández Pacheco.

A year of launches for Sakata
The seed company plans to continue expanding its range of pepper varieties. Javier Pérez, bell pepper product manager, said that "this season, we are going to launch four bell pepper varieties for different segments. The goal is to have an excellent portfolio that can cover all the grower's needs."
