Friends of the Earth Award 2023 goes to Monica Solarino

A pragmatic and multi-disciplinary approach to the cultivation of oranges

Bioagricola F.lli Solarino is a family business whose origins go back more than a century and are firmly rooted in the production of citrus fruits. Already 20 years ago, with the first EU regulations, the company complied with the EC regulations 834/2007 and 889/2008, as well as with the EU regulation 2023/121, the most recent on the organic production of agricultural products. Indeed, the company has always pursued an agronomic management based on the natural cycles and on traditional Sicilian agricultural methods.

Situated in a well-known area, the Sicilian 'Val di Noto', the company's crops are located between the provinces of Syracuse and Ragusa, between Noto and Ispica. Here, for several years now, the company has been rationalizing and improving its processes in order to face increasingly competitive and demanding markets, with the use of the most modern agronomic and marketing techniques, with the help of drones for the observation of citrus groves, and with the cultivation of varieties that are best suited to the soil, such as Naveline, New Hall, Lane Late and others.

These varieties are appreciated, the former for their earliness, the latter for their late harvesting. Production begins at the beginning of November and ends at the end of April.

The multidisciplinary and practical approach to its products has led to the growth of a company that now not only exports citrus fruits throughout the world but has also branched out into the preparation of ingredients for cosmetics and artisan pastries. It is for these qualities that Monica Solarino, who runs the company together with her brother Giuseppe, has been awarded the Coldiretti 'Friends of the Earth' 2023 prize.

Monica Solarino and the award from the Ministry of Enterprises and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso

"Our mission is the export of the history, products and essence of the Sicilian territory. "This award recognizes not only our business skills and our presence in international markets, but also our determination to look with confidence to the great future of Italian products abroad, with a focus on the export of our citrus fruits (the company also produces grapefruit and lemons - ed.) and creativity. We teach how to use orange peels in the preparation of sweets, and we produce an orange powder that is used in the cosmetics we export. Equally important is our organic jam.”

"I would like to take this opportunity to announce that the citrus campaign is just around the corner, and that this year it will be in the best conditions, starting with the large calibers, which are very well received abroad. The demand for our product is once again confirmed for 2023/24, with most of the requests coming from Scandinavia, Central and Eastern Europe, as well as the United Arab Emirates (the latter is a new market for the company - ed.)," concludes Solarino.

All the products of Bioagricola F.lli Solarino are certified by CCPB srl, F.D.A. (Food and Drug Administration), BIO according to EG-Öko-Verordnung, AB Agricolture Biologique, Bio Suisse.
