Sakata presents Kai:

New zucchini variety with resistance to the New Delhi virus

Kai is Sakata's latest zucchini launch and the first to include resistance to the New Delhi virus. Cecilio Fernández, a zucchini and cucumber product promoter, is sure that this variety will have an excellent reception. "The New Delhi virus is a great concern for farmers, and there is a clear demand for varieties with resistance. In addition to having it, Kai offers great profitability for producers without compromising important aspects, such as production and fruit quality."

Cecilio explained how Kai manages to significantly reduce labor and costs: "It requires less frequent grooming because of its erect stem. In addition, its open plant size facilitates the application of phytosanitary products and the harvesting of the fruit." In addition, Kai allows harvesting to be done in a manner that prevents the mechanical transmission of Potyvirus.

Kai is a variety for the early segment, with transplants from August and February to March. It's worth noting that, in this segment, farmers value a variety's precocity very positively. "Kai is an early variety that works very well with heat, so it can yield a very good production," stated Matias Garcia, commercial manager of Sakata in Almeria.

Its fruits are cylindrical and straight. They have a high uniformity throughout their length and throughout the cycle. The Kai variety maintains the fruit quality to which Sakata's genetics are accustomed: a dark, bright color, with a small macula and pistil scar, and an excellent postharvest.

Another new launch for Almeria's Levante
Sakata also plans to launch a new variety for the Levante area this Friday. This new variety is Isleta, a zucchini that meets the high production needs of producers in the region of Níjar. Like Kai, Isleta is recommended for summer and spring segments, with transplants in August and from mid-February to March. This plant is very well adapted to the area. It's very productive in hot weather, and its fruit format is perfectly suited to the organic market.
