Egyptian pomegranate campaign to start with lower volumes than last season

The Egyptian pomegranate campaign starts soon, with yields lower than last season, according to Mohammad Hassan, export sales manager of Al Gamal for import and export.

Mohammad said, "This year's yields have been impacted by climate disruptions, mainly thermal variations and generally higher temperatures than last year."

Egypt's usual export volumes are around 250 thousand tonnes, says Mohammad. "The majority of production is concentrated in the Asyut region, with areas exceeding 4,200 hectares. Al Badari center based in this region is renowned for the international trade in pomegranates and is currently animated with a good number of exporters and buyers. Varieties offered include 116, Asyut Al Badari, and Wonderful Sahraoui. Despite lower volumes, quality remains good this year, with good brix and sizes ranging from 350g to 900g."

The season begins with strong demand, according to Mohammad. "Egyptian pomegranates have a stable customer base, in Arab countries, Russia, East Asia, Canada, Sweden, Australia, and the rest of the European market. Many countries produce pomegranates, such as India, Iran, Tunisia, and others.... but we're in direct competition with Turkish exporters. I think Egyptian exporters will perform well this season, thanks to the Wonderful and Al Badari varieties."

"The season is starting with higher prices than the previous season, which is directly linked to the drop in volumes," concludes Mohammad.
