Klaus Burger, owner of Fritz Burger GmbH & Co. KG, about avocados from Westfalia Fruit:

"Even during the rather quiet summer vacations, demand continues"

According to Klaus Burger, demand for avocados has been consistent throughout the year. "Even during the rather quiet summer vacations, demand has continued. However, our customer base has also expanded, as some customers from our competitors now buy avocados from us. This is due in no small part to the good qualities that the Westfalia Fruit company guarantees."

Burger is the owner of Fritz Burger GmbH & Co. KG at the Nuremberg wholesale market and the exclusive partner of Westfalia Fruit GmbH (formerly Hausladen) of Munich. He receives fresh avocados almost daily and purchases around 500 boxes of 3 to 4 kg each per week.

"In recent years, there has been an increasing trend toward ready-to-eat, so unripe produce is almost no longer sold at all. Customers only want to buy avocados on the spot. In this regard, there have been virtually no complaints throughout the year because Westfalia's ripening facility is up to date," Burger said. "We have also been able to increase sales for avocados. Despite the slow demand due to the vacations, sales for avocados are stable."

The avocados are sourced from various origins throughout the year, which also makes them available year-round, such as Israel, Mexico and Peru. Price fluctuations would have been limited for avocados. Although he used to be able to offer varieties such as Fuerte, he said the Hass variety has become widely established. "Currently, the produce comes primarily from Peru. Since temperatures in countries like Peru remain relatively consistent throughout the year, seasons can also be extended accordingly. In addition, larger quantities of blueberries and green asparagus are also coming into Europe."

His customers include restaurants, retailers and wholesalers. "As long as the cold chain or supply chain works well, availability also remains stable. But in our industry, it also depends in the end on communication within the chain and personal contacts."

What he has noticed in sales, he said, is that sales at weekly markets are almost exclusively on weekends. "Even in the restaurant business, you notice that customers who used to go out to eat maybe three or four times now only frequent the restaurants once or twice. Even in our store, sales seem to be moving more toward weekends, which is not easy for my staff, who also want to work during the week." Despite this, however, he is optimistic: "Our company has been around for 90 years. We will be able to manage that as well."
