Twenty-two million kilos of the 35 million kilos that are expected to be produced in this Vinalopó Table Grape campaign in the province of Alicante correspond to the Aledo variety. This is the variety that people eat on New Year's Eve and it's the one that remains the longest time on the plant and, therefore, it's the most exposed grape.
Since it's such a special grape, it requires special surveillance by the Civil Guard so that criminals don't steal it. Some 175 Civil Guards will reinforce security during the grape harvesting campaign, according to the Civil Guard and the Government.
The goal is to guarantee security and avoid any criminal act that endangers the campaign, stated Carlos Sánchez, the sub-delegate of the Government in the province of Alicante. Sanchez praised "the excellent work of the Civil Guard and the coordination with the local police of all the municipalities involved in the harvest."
The six grape varieties that the Protected Designation of Origin of the Vinalopó Bagged Table Grape covers are the Ideal, Aledo, Rosetti, Red Globe, Doña María, and Victoria grapes, which are mainly grown in the Alicante municipalities of Agost, Aspe, Monforte del Cid, Novelda, Hondón de las Nieves, Hondón de los Frailes, and La Romana.
