Higher pricing on Costa Rican pineapples

Supply of pineapples continues to be on the shorter side. “The industry in Costa Rica is currently looking at lower yields,” says Sofia Acon of Kapi Kapi Growers. “This is due to multiple factors including adverse weather conditions and higher costs of supplies, which caused a drop in production that started over a year or more ago. Now we’re seeing the results of that.”

Kapi Kapi ships pineapples from Costa Rica year-round. Along with the traditional and Crownless pineapple varieties, the newest addition to the grower's lineup is the Oro pineapple. The name derives from the Spanish word for gold and the fruit features a high-shell color.

Steady movement
Demand for pineapples is steady. “There are usually peaks in demand for most holidays such as Valentine’s Day, Easter, Memorial Day, Thanksgiving and other holidays.”

Sustainable production is a key differentiator for Kapi Kapi. “There’s an increasing interest in this type of growing in North America,” Acon says. While the company has its Certified Sustainably Grown and Rainforest Alliance certifications, it’s looking to achieve its Carbon Neutral certification in 2024.

Meanwhile on pricing, pineapple pricing has been in the higher range and has been steady for the last few weeks. “We’re hoping it stays steady as it has been for the remainder of the year because of supply,” says Acon.
