Fresh fruit export season set to start tonight at Port of Pecém

The start of the 2023/2024 fresh fruit export season is set to kick off tonight (August 25) at the Port of Pecém. This season’s first shipment will amount to 2,500 tonnes. It will encompass a variety of products, including melons, watermelons, mangoes, and grapes grown in the states of Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Pernambuco, and Bahia.

Out of this total, 98% will be offloaded at the ports of Rotterdam and London, while the remaining portion will be directed to other European ports. The MSC Sofia Celeste will be the first vessel used for shipping the 2023/2024 fruit harvest to Europe this season.

André Magalhães, the Commercial Director for Pecém Port Complex, notes, “This operation represents the start of the fruit season, a flagship endeavor for us. We hold high expectations for this year’s harvest in terms of exports to Europe and the United States.”

Pecém has already seen the export of 25.6 thousand tonnes of fruits within the first seven months of this year. Daniel Soares, the MSC manager in Fortaleza and Pecém, explains that while MSC has operated in Pecém since the port’s inauguration back in 2002, the fruit export service only commenced in 2017.

“MSC has maintained a dedicated service, capitalizing on Pecém’s strategic location. The terminal provides quality and safety, where all fruits undergo weighing and scanning procedures. These conditions are conducive to facilitating and supporting exports. Since then, it has been a resounding success,” he summarizes.
