The harvest of the earliest peach varieties of the DO Melocotón de Calanda in Caspe has already started. Producers expect to harvest 4.5 million kilos of peaches in this campaign, doubling the production of 2022.
However, the final amount will depend on the weather, as storms could still spoil the fruit that is already ripe on the trees, stated Samuel Sancho, the president of the Regulatory Council.
This year, the harvest started two weeks earlier than usual because last year producers had introduced the early variety known as the 570 peach. In the areas with later varieties, producers completed on-tree bagging work this week, a step that guarantees a uniform ripening and a higher quality product.
