Two operators report that, despite an average drop in production of 30%, the start of the grape season in Puglia has been satisfactory. They both agree that seeded grapes are doing well, especially the Red Globe variety, whose prices have tripled compared with last year. Seedless grapes have not been doing as well.

The harvesting of Red Globe officially started on August 21st 2023. "We no longer grow early grapes and instead focus on medium-late ones, so we started a bit later than other companies in the Bari area. Quantities are 30% lower than last year. For some varieties, such as Regal, they are even 50% lower. Current prices are satisfactory, those of Red Globe have tripled compared with last year," reports one operator.
"Morale is high because of the prices, but the volumes sold are still low. This is probably due to the end of the holiday season or to the fact prices are considered too high. However, the lower quantities could lead to a better quality," adds the other.
Both producers stress that "seeded grapes, who everybody thought were over, are doing rather well, with high prices and suitable quality. There is a future for them."
"Red Globe is an international seeded cultivar that is much appreciated all over the world. In addition, it is easy to grow, which is definitely a plus."
According to one of the operators, the Red Globe season could be very smooth. "Considering the lower quantities and good quality, I believe that prices will continue to be high throughout the season. The situation seems promising." The second operator is more cautious, as commercialization in the short term could go differently considering the quantities of different varieties that will arrive on the market.
