Carbon neutral pineapple produced in Costa Rica is finalist in world sustainability awards

The outstanding Del Monte Zero pineapple, produced exclusively in Costa Rica by Fresh Del Monte, will be one of the finalists in the World Sustainability Awards 2023, to be held in October in Amsterdam.

These awards are given by Sustainability Leaders, a global community intelligence network for occupational safety and ESG (Environmental, Social and Governance) executives, and are intended to boost global sustainability initiatives. Through these awards, recognition is given to change-makers in sustainability issues in the business world.

Fresh Del Monte's Del Monte Zero will be competing in the New Launch category, which applies to products or services launched in the last 12 months which aim to have an immediate positive impact on consumers.

Del Monte Zero is Fresh Del Monte's first certified carbon neutral pineapple. Carbon neutrality entails managing to offset any emissions generated with positive activities helping reduce the carbon footprint, thereby striving for a zero balance.

In the case of this pineapple, efforts have been made mainly on the improvement of the transportation fleet, the constant monitoring of emissions, and the reabsorption, neutralization and offsetting of the emissions produced by the more than 9,000 hectares of forest that the company owns in the country; approximately 5 million trees that make achieving a zero carbon footprint possible.

Del Monte Zero stands out thanks to being carbon neutral 'from field to fork', which means that the entire production chain is taken into account, and the carbon footprint is offset at every stage, from production to consumption.

Additional accolades
The company also recently received the 2023 SEAL Business Sustainability Award in the Environmental Initiative category.

This award is presented to companies and global leaders that make measurable contributions to sustainability and who develop innovative initiatives that will have a lasting positive impact on the environment.

Fresh Del Monte received the award for reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 22.64% across its agricultural value chain. This was achieved by upgrading its ocean fleet with six new fuel-efficient vessels and launching solar and wind energy facilities in California and Costa Rica, respectively.
