August 24th and 25th, in the Lecce province

Field days dedicated to Eden pears in Puglia

The field days dedicated to the Eden pear variety are back after last year's great success. They are organized by Cairo and Doutcher (the exclusive distributor in Italy of Eden plants) and will take place in Copertino-Leverano (Lecce) on August 24th and 25th, 2023.

Various expert technicians will gather in Puglia to assess the orchards, illustrate what's new and answer questions on agronomic and varietal characteristics to disseminate defense and nutritional information to obtain even better results.

During the event, guests will visit both the Eden orchards planted in May 2021 and the new ones planted this year. It will also be possible to visit the breeding section featuring new pear selections that are e the result of the genetic improvement activities carried out by the company that organized the event, with the help of leading international breeders.

Israeli company Ben Dor which created the variety, professors from the Agricultural and Biological Sciences departments from the universities of Bari and Naples, agronomists from Fruit Net System (a technical office that has followed the project in Italy from the start) and many international operators that promote and sell the well-known cultivar will attend.

Uzi Cairo, owner of Cairo & Doutcher, commented that: "despite the environmental and weather problems, production is regular and constant with yields exceeding 30 tons/hectare during the second year. Over 38 hectares have been planted so far and they will increase a lot already during the next season. There is a lot of interest and operators recognize us as a professional and reliable company. The latest bare-root orchards were planted in July due to the bad weather and are perfectly healthy. The development is uniform and there are no rooting and/or phytosanitary problems. Eden is rather early, rustic and adaptable - a valid alternative in a context where pear cultivation was not looking as profitable as in the past."

Commercial and shelf-life tests carried out on the 2022 production returned extremely interesting results: the crunchiness and high sugar level (nearing 18° Brix already upon harvesting) were much appreciated by consumers. In addition, the high dry matter content and the characteristics of the plants meant the fruits could be stored in cold storage units for over 8 months.

"Stakeholders have recently defined this campaign as terrible. However, despite the uncertainty, Eden pears achieved positive results thanks to their great adaptability to climate change. Eden pears only need 6 treatments, 2 of which are leaf fertilizers. Despite the ongoing bad weather conditions, volumes expected are in line with initial forecasts. We believe the Eden variety could be the answer to problems that have emerged over the past few years."
