From July 31, 2023, Great Britain canceled all customs duties and tariff quotas for seven agricultural products from Moldova. These benefits will be valid for the next 12 months. This was reported to NewsMaker.md by the British Embassy in the Republic of Moldova.
The agreement, signed in May by Ambassador Steven Fischer and State Secretary of the Ministry of Economic Development and Digitalization Vadim Gumene, entered into force on July 31. Duties have been lifted for supplies of tomatoes, garlic, table grapes, apples, plums, grape juice, and cherries.
“The UK strongly supports Moldova, the second country most affected by Russia’s illegal invasion of Ukraine, and continues to do everything possible to support the Moldovan people,” the embassy said.
In May, after the signing of the agreement, the Ministry of Economy stated that the UK took the initiative as a sign of solidarity and support for Moldova.
“This initiative demonstrates the UK’s interest in supporting the strategic partnership. The expansion of cooperation offers new opportunities for the development and reorientation of Moldova’s foreign trade in the context of the crisis in the region,” the ministry said.
There are 15 economic agreements between Moldova and the UK. In 2022, the UK ranked 19th among Moldova’s international trading partners.
