Gautier Semences celebrates 10th anniversary of melon variety Jenga

“The Jenga has what it takes to entice both producers and consumers”

2023 marks the 10th anniversary of the marketing of the Charentais melon variety, Jenga, the reference in terms of taste within the Gautier range. To celebrate in style, Gautier Semences created an anniversary logo and a specific communication campaign from July to October.

“The event kicked off on July 14 at the Melon Festival in Pernes-les-Fontaine, a small village in the Vaucluse region where Charentais melons are grown. At this public event, Gautier Semences promoted its beautiful summer fruit and the melon sector. Visitors were able to taste some Jenga melon and more from the Gautier range so that they could appreciate the taste qualities of our products,” explains David Madiot, cucurbit range manager at Gautier Semences.

A tasty and resistant variety
Jenga has survived 10 years, seducing growers and consumers alike. The variety indeed has many assets. “It is very attractive visually, but it also has remarkable taste qualities, with a very good aroma/sugar balance and a fairly firm flesh. The Jenga also has a great post-harvest shelf-life. In terms of production, its high commercial yield, centered on the 12-gauge, has easily convinced the producers. Additionally, the Jenga has a powerful root system that enables it to withstand harsh weather conditions. The variety also keeps a uniform appearance throughout its cycle.”

The Jenga is a variety suitable for both indoor and outdoor cultivation at the heart of the season. The melon is planted from the end of March to the end of June and harvested from mid-July to September, depending on the cultivation method and basin. It is a variety that grows very well in the southeast of France, as it tolerates hot and dry climates well.

The melon has been an emblematic species of the Gautier Semences range. “Located in a historical production basin, we have always been keen to offer melon varieties with remarkable taste qualities. The Jenga is a good example. It is a variety acclaimed for its pleasant texture and excellent aroma/sugar balance, delighting the taste buds of even the most demanding consumers. True to our Provencal roots, we pay particular attention to the taste of our varieties, a real signature of Gautier Semences.”
