Nihat Bay from Bay Handels GmbH in Stuttgart:

"If we get too few onions, it's not because of availability, but because of other factors"

The onion market is now in its annual seasonal change. "German winter onions are now increasingly hitting the market. In parallel, we have been marketing new Spanish butcher's onions and red onions from Egypt since April. Soon we are also expecting the first red onions from regional cultivation", reports Nihat Bay, potato and onion wholesaler at Stuttgart wholesale market.

The company has been present at the local wholesale market for ten years now and mainly supplies caterers and retail customers in the south-west of Germany. "Due to the heat in many countries of origin, it is sometimes difficult to get the desired calibres. Added to this are the extreme price jumps. Spanish butcher's onions were traded at 30 euros per 25 kg for a while, but in the meantime the prices have roughly halved. German table onions, on the other hand, are mostly offered at pleasing prices."

Nihat Bay is dedicated to the marketing of potatoes, onions and garlic at the Stuttgart wholesale market.

According to Bay, however, there is no question of bottlenecks. "I think there are enough onions. If we don't get enough supplies, it doesn't depend so much on availability, but on other factors like logistics. The same is true for potatoes; there was a noticeable shortage of goods for a while, especially in the case of large-crop goods."

The product range of Bay Handels GmbH is rounded off by garlic in different varieties. "When the opportunity arises, we offer fresh garlic from German cultivation. However, the marketing window for green garlic is very short. We mainly source the commercially available dried garlic from Spain and France, as we want to offer our customers an alternative to China."
