Poland calls on the EU to ban the import of frozen berries from Ukraine

Polish farmers fear a repeat of the situation with grain when uncontrolled imports affect the market and cause a significant price drop. This time we are talking about frozen strawberries and raspberries.

Poland will appeal to EU Commissioner for Trade Valdis Dombrovskis with a call to impose a ban on importing frozen raspberries and strawberries from Ukraine into the country, writes Focus.ua, referencing a publication on the Polish government portal from July 14.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development of Poland Robert Telus initiated a video meeting with the agriculture ministers of Bulgaria, Romania, Slovakia, and Hungary to discuss “preventive measures regarding the import of fruit and berry crops from Ukraine”.

The publication says that in 2022-2023, imports of Ukrainian strawberries and frozen raspberries to Poland increased significantly.

“This means huge difficulties for Polish producers and severe market disruptions. There is no such problem in other countries of our coalition,” said officials in Poland. It is reported that the relevant request will soon be submitted to the European Commission.
