Imports from Egypt up by 189.4% compared to June 2022 and by 302.56% compared to the average

Volume of oranges imported into EU in June up by 161% compared to June 2022

According to the latest Enhanced Monitoring of Citrus Imports into the EU report published by the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, between September 2022 and June 2023, the EU market imported a total of 816,370 tons from third countries. This is 39.9% more than in the same period of the previous year (+232,800 t) and 23.2% (+153,700 t) more than average.

As can be seen in the table above, Egypt has driven this growth of imports, accounting for 52.4% of the total (427,900 tons) and gaining 16 points of market share. Its volumes have exceeded the average by 77.2% (+186,500 t) and soared by 110.9% compared to last season (+225,034 t).

South Africa, with a share of 36.6%, comes next, with close to 300,000 tons. The country increased its volumes by 19.1% (+47,900 t) compared to the average and by 16.6% compared to the 2021/22 season (+42,551 t).

Morocco, on the other hand, has recorded a significant reduction of its supplies compared to the average (-78%, 36,830 t) and to last year (-55.6%, -13,085 t), with 10,449 t.

Focusing on the first half of 2023, the total of oranges imported by the EU amounted to 458,557 tons, which is 85.1% (+210,800 t) more than in the same period of 2022 and 42.3% (+136,400 t) more than average.

Egypt stands out, as in the previous reports, with an increase of 111% (+223,800 t) compared to the previous season, and of 77.9% (+186,300 t) compared to the average, having supplied 93% of the total in that period. Thus, it increased its share by almost 20 points. Morocco, on the other hand, has seen its volumes reduced by 89.2% (-32,600 t) compared to the average.

In every month, the volumes have stood well above those of the year 2022, especially during May and June, which are the last months analyzed in the report. In fact, with 86,996 tons, the volume of oranges imported into the EU in June is 161% higher than the 33,329 tons imported from third countries in June 2022.

Proportionally, the imports from South Africa have recorded the most significant growth, with a spectacular 292.65% increase in June, totaling 12,839 tons. Meanwhile, Egypt has had the largest share, delivering 72,511 tons to the EU market (+189.4% compared to June 2022 and +302.56% compared to the average of the same month in the last 5 years); that is, 83% of all orange imports from third countries.
