Switzerland: The Schneebeli family relies on year-round cultivation of fine mushrooms

"In the past, we could only deliver seasonally to major distributors"

The Schneebeli family's organic farm in Obfelden, Canton of Zurich, has been growing fine mushrooms for more than 40 years. His father started mushroom production, explains Fabian Schneebeli: "In the past, we only produced in spring and fall and could deliver seasonally to wholesalers," the farm manager tells lid. As the demand for mushrooms increased, the sporadic deliveries became too few and the customers demanded year-round mushroom cultivation - so Schneebelis invested in a modern greenhouse in 1997. The cultivation of fine mushrooms has grown steadily and in the meantime has become the most important branch of the 22-hectare farm.

The Schneebeli family's organic mushroom farm focuses primarily on the production of oyster mushrooms, but also grows shiitake and lime mushrooms in smaller quantities. Oyster mushrooms are typically straw mushrooms, so they grow on a substrate mixture of straw. "This mushroom fits best on a farm because there are many arable crops that produce straw as a by-product that can be reused for substrate."
