Malaysian company NewLeaf witnesses strong global expansion

Durian grower's investment in processing facilities capitalizes on growing demand

Over the past five years, Newleaf, a Malaysian durian plantation, processing, and export company, has experienced remarkable growth and expansion. With the recent establishment of its own processing facilities in the Klang Valley, Malaysia, the company has made significant strides in the durian processing and export business. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, the company has successfully navigated the market, delivering a range of premium durian products to consumers worldwide. Kaeden, one of the founders of the company, explains the company's focus and success.

Kaeden explains: "Our company specializes in the production and export of various durian products, including frozen whole fruit, frozen durian pulp, frozen durian paste, durian coffee, and durian milk tea. The primary durian varieties cultivated by the company include the Musang King, IOI, and Black Thorn. While fresh durians are primarily sold in select markets such as Hong Kong, Singapore, and Malaysia. Our frozen products are shipped to countries like China, the United States, and Australia, ensuring the availability of premium Malaysian durians throughout the year."

"Our Malaysian durians are renowned for their premium quality, attributed to factors such as the Musang King breed and the practice of harvesting the fruit when it naturally falls from the tree, indicating full ripeness. Malaysian durians offer a richer, sweeter flavor that truly captures the essence of the fruit. By delivering fully ripe durians with superior taste and texture, the company differentiates itself in the market," Kaeden explains enthusiastically.

Malaysia's durian export industry to China has experienced significant growth since 2020, both in terms of export volume and value. In 2020, Malaysia exported a total of 9,6 million kg of frozen durian products, generating an export value of RM 458 million. The following year witnessed remarkable growth, with Malaysia exporting 18 million kg of frozen durian products, resulting in an export value of RM 925 million, reflecting a value growth of 102%. This growth trend continued in 2022, with Malaysia exporting 19 million kg of frozen durian products. The export value for 2022 amounted to RM 1,6 billion, reflecting a value growth of 73.2%.

These figures clearly illustrate the remarkable growth of Malaysia's durian export industry to China over the last three years, demonstrating a surging demand for Malaysian durian products in the Chinese market. The export volume and value of frozen durian whole fruit, frozen durian pulp, and frozen durian paste have shown consistent growth, reflecting the increasing popularity and appeal of Malaysian durians. The continuous expansion in export volume and value between 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 highlight the positive trajectory of Malaysia's durian export industry and its potential for further growth in the future.

Understanding the growing demand for Malaysian durians and the need to meet stringent quality standards, the company made a strategic decision to establish its own processing facilities. Equipped with new technology, these facilities enable the company to process and freeze durians swiftly after harvest, ensuring the fruits are perfectly ripe and ready for consumption. By processing the durians in-house, the company can closely monitor quality control and deliver superior products to its customers.

Kaeden elaborates, "Our products cater to a diverse range of customers. Durians in whole fruit and pulp forms are sold through retail channels, both online and offline, allowing consumers to enjoy the unique experience of cracking open the fruit themselves. Additionally, durian paste is supplied to food processing companies, such as bakeries and pastry producers, for use in their productions. We have witnessed significant growth in the Chinese market, as Malaysian durians gain popularity among consumers. With China's increasing demand for durians, we see a vast opportunity for expansion into this larger market."

With the recent expansion of the processing facility, incorporating new machinery and additional space, the facility's capacity has increased significantly. It is now able to process up to 1,000 tonnes of durians and durian products, offering an innovative, palatable, and easily accessible product range for consumers.

Newleaf ensures compliance with international standards, including Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP), Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Points (HACCP) and others. The company holds high ambitions for the export market potential of Malaysian durians and the durian-related food business.
