Demand for organic fruits from Calabria is counter-trending

A small family business made up of three dynamic women who grow and process mainly citrus fruit from the Coriglianeto and Colagnati valleys in Corigliano-Rossano, Calabria. The sun, air, water and a lot of passion have been the ingredients of the early clementines harvested in the fertile land of the BioSamurra company since 1987, as well as small quantities of other citrus fruits, olives, clementine juice and tangerines sold under the brand registered in 2017.

"We are convinced that change happens on the land and on the table with good, clean and fair food. That is why we prefer growing produce using organic techniques and employing the good practices inherited from the past, respecting the dignity of people and their work. This is in combination with the microclimate, the soil, the low yields and the ability to innovate. We continue to dream, promoting critical and responsible consumption and durable development in our territory every day together with many other virtuous businesses," reports Cristiana Smurra, owner of the BioSmurra family business.

"We work on many fronts such as sustainability - in both agriculture and food - critical consumption and numerous other elements that we hope to share with an increasing number of growers and consumers That is why we have decided to build a network with other small ethical producers we can use as suppliers by paying the right prices with the objective of conveying value to the entire production and avoid waste within a circular economy. We also create jobs, so we provide economic answers to the territory: the morale of those who work in a solidarity economy is extraordinarily high, at least according to our experience!"

"We work mainly with fresh produce, then there are the juices, made mainly with clementines or with the addition of other citrus fruits such as bergamot oranges, limes, lemons, blond oranges, etc. Although the markets have registered a drop in the demand for organic produce, we continue to grow. Our professionalism and continuity are rewarding us, as we never push if the produce is not top-quality. Our mantra is that facts come before words. As part of this vision, our prices are not subject to market variations, even though citrus fruit volumes dropped considerably this year, by as much as 45% compared with the past season. Our products are appreciated by aware consumers who recognize their value. Thinking of ourselves as part of a network with shared objectives implies concrete actions, a few renunciations and the creation of a responsible shared path that can also be visionary."

40% of the production is commercialized in Italy and 60% is shipped abroad to France, Belgium, Germany and Switzerland also through Sicilian consortium ‘Le Galline Felici’ and other organic cooperatives covering 60 hectares in total, which mainly produce citrus fruits used to obtain various types of 100% juices that are free from sugar and preservatives.
