Sage Fruit Company, a grower, packer and shipper of Washington tree fruit, is gearing up for the highly anticipated Northwest cherry crop. This season, the industry will see a significant increase in volume after a year when the crop was marred by Mother Nature. During the summer months, Sage Fruit will carry both organic and conventional Dark Sweet cherries as well as conventional Rainier cherries.
During the summer, Sage Fruit will carry both organic and conventional Dark Sweet cherries as well as conventional Rainier cherries.
While the weather in the Northwest has warmed up in recent weeks, the cold-mild winter, combined with an early April storm, delayed bloom and pushed back Washington’s normal start date by about 10 days. However, with good separation between districts, Sage Fruit is set to have promotable volume well into August.
As consumer demands have warranted, the company has added considerable acreage of organic orchards and this season, it is excited about the growth it has experienced in its overall volume across all commodities and varieties. While the organic Northwest cherry crop is roughly 2.5-3 percent, it will continue to grow in the upcoming years.
In addition to its emphasis on organic production, Sage Fruit has also focused more on sourcing sustainable packaging solutions for its retail partners. Organic consumers have shown significant interest in more sustainable lifestyles. With increased concerns over single-use plastic, the grower-shipper is seeking alternative solutions to traditional packaging.

Additionally, as retail-specific initiatives regarding sustainable packaging become more prevalent, the grower-shipper has begun trialing new bag solutions. Its goal is to get ahead of retail timelines and bring more sustainable options to customers.
With a focus on both organics and sustainability, exhibiting at the Organic Produce Summit is a natural fit for the company and it is excited to share its new developments.
