Antoine Guyot, Del Monte

Solid demand for pineapples despite the arrival of summer fruit

“We have reached a turning point,” explains Antoine Guyot of Del Monte France. “The market was well focused during the first months of 2023, with a high demand and prices that followed.” A dynamic market for the first half of 2023.

Summer fruit and pineapple volumes on the rise
The demand is still good, with prices in line, but the arrival of stone fruits, melons and watermelons has kicked off the summer season. “There is no seasonality for pineapples since we offer it all year round, but larger volumes could be the opportunity for promotional actions. In the current economic context, this period will be an opportunity to meet consumer expectations and boost the category.”

At the moment, there is some merchandise from Africa and Panama on the market, but Costa Rica remains the reference for Extra Sweet pineapples shipped by boat.

More operators on the market
“There are a few intermediaries from northern countries which we have not seen for months and who want to trade on our markets. After spending the first 5 months of the year with a dynamic market, we need to keep it that way in spite of the larger supply. Fortunately, in times like these, the strength of the brands can help to hold the category together, energizing it with a portfolio adapted to the changes in consumer needs. Del Monte, which created the Extra Sweet pineapple under the Del Monte Gold name over 25 years ago, confirms its role as a market leader. The leading brand has always played such an important role, and even today, Del Monte remains the driving force behind the French pineapple market.”
