The world's top five biggest exporters of ginger

As detailed by the Head of ADEX Consulting-CIEN ADEX, Lizbeth Pumasunco, China is the world's leading exporter of ginger with shipments of US$536 million and a 46.8% share in 2021.

It is followed by the Netherlands with a 13% share, and India with a 9.6% share.

Peru ranked fourth with shipments of about US$84 million and a 7.3% share.

Finally, Thailand ranked fifth with a 4.5% share.

The most important destinations for Peruvian ginger, by FOB value, are the United States with US$30 million, the Netherlands with US$15 million, South Korea with US$3.24 million, Spain with US$3.08 million, and Canada with US$3.02 million, Pumasunco stated.

This ranking, however, changes when the volume of shipments is taken into account. By volume, the United States (25,700 tons) and the Netherlands (14,900 tons) continue to be the leading destinations; but Canada ranks third with 2,800 tons, and is followed by Spain with 2,600 tons and the United Kingdom with 1,900 tons.

“Peru exports fresh and pulverized ginger, but the industry uses the raw material in developed products, directly in food, beverage, pharmaceutical, and cosmetic lines,” the specialist stated during the launch of Ginger Week 2023.

According to data from ADEX, ginger shipments in the first two months of the year totaled US$14,459,000, i.e. 5.2% more than the $13,743,000 achieved in the same period of the year.
