Industry tomatoes doing very well on the food service market

"An extraordinary recovery of consumption in the food service segment, where the double concentrate and 3kg format that have reached skyrocketing prices while the sale of the half-kilo retail format is at a standstill! Big retail chains - except for discount stores, which are registering a +8/10% growth - are suffering from a drop in sales of tomato tins: -7/8% on average compared to last year. Exports are good, especially overseas," stresses Giuseppe Stasi, sales manager at Rosso Gargano.

Rosso Gargano was set up in 2008 and strengthened its position over the years increasing its exports, which now represent 60% of the total. The brand is available in 55 countries worldwide and mainly in Japan. The brand combines in fact the two souls of the company - the agricultural and the industrial one - which is what makes the difference when it comes to guaranteeing quality, a short chain and good results in the kitchen. The certified Italian produce is increasingly demanded abroad, especially oblong tomatoes typical of the Capitanata area.

"It is still early to make an estimate on transplants, which will start in late March/early April. We will see what will happen with prices, considered that Spain has signed the framework agreement for the 2023 campaign of industry tomatoes. More specifically, in Estremadura, the leading productive district in the country, an agreement has been signed between the agricultural and industrial sectors establishing the average price at €150/ton, against the €102 of the past season and the €78 of two years ago. This will probably mean that northern Italy will not close at €108.50/ton like it did in 2022, as we need to consider the higher costs, the consequences of climate change and drought, which is affecting yields making constant irrigation necessary."

"On a commercial level, we are labelling the new range of ready-to-use sauces, which are now available in two versions: basil and arrabbiata. Our Passata di Puglia is the most popular product, available in 400 gram jars. Consumers reward those who invest on the chain and the territory and, in fact, results proved us right: we managed to penetrate the market in northern Italy through eight platforms."

The Foggia province is the undisputed leader on the market and represents the leading producer on a domestic level, with crops covering 15,000 hectares on average and volumes reaching 1.4 million tons.

The markets of reference for RossoGargano are the big retail chain as well as H&R and catering businesses all over Europe, the US, Japan, Canada and Australia. The company is investing in communication and promotion and has conquered new markets where the brand is growing, especially in the retail and food service segments in Germany, France, Spain and the Arab Emirates. The company's mission is to keep creating value over time and build a company model where human resources, the territory and a short chain are at the center.

The brand holds the Bio, GlobalGAP and GRASP certifications, plus: IFS, BRC, ISO 22005, JAS for Japan and Orthodox Union Kosher for the Jewish market.
