Germany: Aldi Süd announces price reductions on fruit and vegetables
Aldi Süd has announced it has reduced the prices of select fruits and vegetables in all 2,000 of its stores in Germany, commencing 6 March. Among the fresh produce items to be reduced are Natur Lieblinge mangoes, reduced from €1.49 to €0.99; grapefruit, reduced from €0.59 to €0.49; spring onions, from €0.69 to €0.49; and Braeburn apples, reduced from €1.29 to €0.99.

Carrefour appoints Kenya new Country Manager
Retail chain Carrefour has appointed Christophe Orcet as its new Country Manager, taking over from Frank Moreau. Orcet previously worked in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), where he served as Head of Operations and Commercial at MAF Carrefour. His appointment comes at a time when the retailer is seeking to expand its operations in East Africa.

Switzerland: SPAR opens first unattended SPAR Express store in Zürich
SPAR Switzerland and AVIA opened the first 24/7 SPAR Express forecourt store operating without onsite personnel at Zürich’s Sihlquai bus terminal. The 50m2 store offers about 1,000 products for everyday shopping including bread and bakery products, fruit and vegetables, dairy products, meat, drinks, basic food items, hygiene articles, and car accessories.

Irish take-home grocery sales growth more than doubled in the four weeks to 19 February 2023 as grocery inflation reached a new high of 16.4%, according to latest data from Kantar Ireland.

Waitrose is to press the button on a major revamp of its store estate in a bid to attract customers to the upmarket grocer. The supermarket is cutting costs to free up cash for the overhaul of its 332 stores. A complete refresh would cost up to £250mln, although the amount of money currently available is less than this, The Telegraph reported.

UK salad shortage weighs on supermarket sales - NIQ
A lack of availability in fresh produce categories weighed on sales growth at British supermarkets in the four weeks to February 25, industry data showed. Market researcher NIQ, previously known as NielsenIQ, said total value sales in the fresh produce category grew just 1.1% over the four weeks, with a unit or volume decline of 5.4%. It said supermarkets struggled to meet demand for tomatoes, where unit sales fell 17.6% and for peppers, with unit sales down 16.8%.

Vkusvill launches food sales in UAE
Retailer Vkusvill has begun selling its food products in Dubai through express delivery service YallaMarket, the company said. Vkusvill launched sales in China through Tmall at the end of last year and also began delivering a number of food products to Belarus, Armenia, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

Germany: HelloFresh shares drop as profit outlook disappoints
HelloFresh forecast 2023 profit below analysts' expectations, sending its shares down as much as 12.7%, as fewer people order its meal kits in reopening economies and as inflation trims household budgets. Germany's HelloFresh sees adjusted core profit (AEBITDA) of between 460mln and 540mln euros ($492mln and $577mln) in 2023, compared with analysts' estimate of 547mln euros.

US: All Portland Walmart stores to permanently close in late March
The last two Walmart stores within Portland’s city limits will close in late March, the company announced. The locations, at 1123 North Hayden Meadows Drive and at 4200 Southeast 82nd Avenue at the Eastport Plaza, will both close on Friday, March 24. Walmart says they are closing the stores because they were not meeting financial expectations.

US: Home Chef plans 1st East Coast facility in Baltimore
Meal solutions company Home Chef is expanding manufacturing and distribution with its plans to open a fourth production facility this summer, in Baltimore. The new center, at 1701 East Patapsco Avenue, will create more than 500 jobs in Charm City by 2024 and be Home Chef's first East Coast site to provide meals to the company's growing customer base.

How can supermarkets prevent food waste?
Due to the short shelf life of fruits and vegetables, 40% of fresh produce is wasted post-harvest. In addition to the economic loss, food waste also contributes to releasing carbon emissions into the atmosphere. According to figures from the Inter-American Development Bank, more than 127mln metric tons of food is wasted annually in Latin America and the Caribbean, and more than 66% of this waste occurs at the production, handling, and storage & distribution stages. “Food waste is a significant sustainability issue”, says Manolo Reyes, Senior Vice President of Retail and Alternative Channels for ProducePay.
