Supplies of green bell peppers have been fairly steady. As Michael Wilson of National Produce Marketing Inc. in Etobicoke, Ontario, notes, it is bringing in green bell peppers from a variety of regions, including Georgia, Florida, Mexico, and California, and it’s quite a different scene from a month ago for the commodity. “A month ago, you couldn’t get green bell peppers because they were getting rain in all of the growing areas. They were priced very high if you could get them, and if you did, you wouldn’t want them,” says Wilson.
Green vs. colored peppers
At the same time, demand is also even for green peppers. “While the restaurants use a lot of green peppers and certain nationalities prefer them, the chains and a lot of retailers have also transitioned into colored peppers because they are so easy to get with all of the hothouse options that we have up here,” says Wilson. “There are not a lot of high-end retailers giving green peppers a lot of space these days. It’s more so for the colored peppers.”
That said, given the rain has come off somewhat in those growing areas, prices of green bell peppers have come back down to historical levels.
