Stephan Klünemann builds new production hall for chicory

Marketing of organic chicory is growing

Instead of conventional farming, the Klünemann couple from Geeste in Lower Saxony has been fully committed to organic chicory for several years now. In the future, they will be growing on a different scale: in their newly built production hall, 25 t of chicory can be grown every week - and that on just 2,000 m2 of space. At present, it is 4 t per week. The company has joined Gartenbauzentrale Papenburg eG (GBZ), which markets the produce to natural food chains and retailers throughout Germany. In the future, organic chicory will become the mainstay of the farm.

The couple hopes to fill a gap in the market, especially in northern Germany. "We see this as a growth market," Stephan Klünemann tells Top Agrar. Without GBZ as a marketing partner, which was on board from the start, they probably wouldn't have dared to take this step. After all, the construction of the production hall comes in at a tidy €4 million.
